Arbutus has a long standing tradition of offering excellent vocational training, community involvement & recreational opportunities. This program generates revenue through the sale of products such as boom boards, survey stakes and intarsia creations. Handcrafted wooden quality pieces have been created for fundraising events and special celebrations as well as individual projects that are goal related.

Vocational training and completing ongoing contracts is interwoven with recreational activities as well as life, social and culinary skills. Each person has the opportunity to enhance existing skills as well as learn new ones. Arbutus is an exciting and varied program incorporating bowling, swimming and biking and endeavours to explore seasonal events such as radio control float planes in Duncan, Sandcastle Competition in Parksville and have even gone to a couple of Canucks’ games.

With a competitive edge, Arbutus has won various awards in the community – from entries at the VIEX to the Annual Milk Carton Boat Races hosted by a local agency.

Within the program space are a pool table, dart board, fooseball table and mini putt golf which are available to all the participants at Clay Tree to enjoy. Everyone looks forward to Tuesday mornings in Arbutus when our volunteer Greg shares his love of music and singing. All program participants anticipate playing instruments and singing along.

Partnerships are an integral connection to our community. Arbutus is honored to have been approached by Legion #10 to replace the memorial crosses on all the veteran graves in Nanaimo.
