Practicum

Assisting students in their learning and developing the skills they need.

Clay Tree Welcomes Practicum Students

Clay Tree Society has become a centre of excellence of education in our community and we are pleased to be working in partnership with Vancouver Island University and the two community colleges, Sprott Shaw and Discovery. We welcome students who are studying: School and Community Support Worker Certificate, Canadian Mental Health Certificate, Practical Nursing, Bachelor of Science, Social Service Diploma, Health Care Attendant.  The Dental Hygiene department at VIU changed the structure their practicum so as every student could have a Clay Tree experience. VIU have referred five Community Support Students to us from their Cowichan Campus.

Our purpose is to assist students in their learning and to develop the skills they need to support individuals with diverse abilities.  With guidance from Clay Tree mentors the students will be exposed to realistic experiences associated with direct practice and will gain self-awareness and the ability to integrate theory into practice.

Annually, we provide 3500 hours of practicum experience to the human services field. Our goal is to stand out in the community as a centre of education and thanks to the enthusiasm of our participants the students themselves and Clay Tree staff this is already a huge success.
